OPTICIAN INFORMATION

Full eye examinations, dispensing services and a wide range of eye care and wear products are available from optician. If you are aged 60 or over or meet one of the conditions below, you will qualify for a free NHS sight test:

  • You are registered as blind or partially sighted.
  • You have been diagnosed as having diabetes or glaucoma.
  • You are aged over 40 and are the parent, brother, sister, or child of someone who has been diagnosed as having glaucoma.
  • You require powerful or complex lenses- you will be informed if this is the case.
  • You receive income support.
  • If you receive Disabled Persons Tax Credit or Working families Tax Credit, you will be entitled to free sight tests if less than £70 of your maximum tax credit has been withdrawn Your tax credit notification statement should say whether you are entitled to help.
  • You are a patient of the Hospital Eye Service.
  • You are entitled to assistance via the low-income scheme.

DO YOU QUALIFY FOR ASSISTANCE WITH THE COST OF GLASSES?

Registered blind or partially sighted people do not automatically receive assistance towards the cost of glasses.

If you need glasses or you need new glasses because your eyesight has changed, the optometrist will give you a prescription. This gives you details of the type of glasses you require. To help pay for the glasses you may qualify for a voucher, this voucher has a monetary value, and the value will depend on the type of glasses that you require.

A voucher will be awarded if you meet one of the following conditions:

  • You receive income support.
  • You receive Disabled Persons Tax Credit or Working families Tax Credit, you will be entitled to free eye tests if less than £70 of your maximum tax credit has been withdrawn. Your tax credit notification statement should say whether you are entitled to help.
  • You need powerful or complex lenses; you will be informed if this is the case.
  • You attend a hospital Eye service because your glasses require changing frequently.
  • You qualify for assistance via the low-income scheme.
