Social Services have a responsibility to care for people who are having difficulty coping with either a short or a long term problem.
They are required to provide service to:
- Children and their families
- Older people
- People with a learning disability
- People with a physical disability
- People with a sensory impairment
- People with a mental health problem
Some people will be referred to Social Services through a professional, such as a GP or a teacher. However if you believe they can help you or want further information about any of their services, you can contact your local Social Services office yourself.
Kent Adult Social Services are keen to help older people remain as active and independent as possible. They have a Care Management service that offers support and advice to older people, to help them stay in their own homes. They offer a range of services including:
- Personal care
- Day care
- Meals service
- Short term breaks in a residential or nursing home to rest or recover from an illness or a hospital stay
- Where it is not possible to stay living at home, they offer help and advice about residential and nursing care.
These are guidelines that have to be followed in order to decide whether a person can receive these services. These are to make sure they are providing a fair and effective service within their resources. If people do not qualify for a service, advice and information is given.
Charges for services - advice and assessment by a Care Manager is free. Charges are made for some services according to the cost of the service and the ability to pay.
