NORTHGATE WARD OVER 60’s COMMUNITY SERVICE
Northgate Ward Over 60’s Community Service is a domiciliary support service for the Over 60’s. We visit clients in their own home and carry out a full assessment and benefit check.
We are a registered charity and supplement work and services offered by the statutory authorities such as Social Services, Health and Housing and churches.
Our aim is to promote independence by providing services that includes advice and practical help to anyone aged 60 years or over, particularly those who are lonely, frail or otherwise vulnerable.
The type of work we do includes:-
Advice and Advocacy – Benefit Advice, helping to complete benefit applications, sorting out arrears of rent and council tax, dealing with utility companies on behalf of clients and debt management. We can help people apply for bus passes, life lines or blue badges.
Practical Help - This includes accessing or providing transport to and from appointments at doctors, chiropodists, opticians, dentist and hospital. We can collect pensions and prescriptions, access help with gardening and DIY, chiropody and shopping. We can give heating advice, help to access grants to make the home warmer, we can re-set heating controls to make heating the home more economical and we can access low energy light bulbs and smoke alarms. We can help teach people to use a microwave or to access disability aids for the home, which will make life safer and easier at home.
Befriending and Social Opportunities- We can arrange for a trained visitor to call weekly for a befriending visit if a person is housebound or lonely. We run a lunch club for active elderly and we can access other lunch clubs for the not so active. We can introduce people to other activities, such as short mat bowls, gentle exercise, art classes, outings and bingo.
We can support a person for a short term, following a hospital stay or offer ongoing general support to give confidence to a person who is finding every day living getting harder.
