CANTERBURY AND DISTRICT PENSIONERS FORUM

Our Forum is run by older people for older people!
In recent years right across the country, groups of older people have got together to develop Forums, where they can express their opinions and have the opportunity to influence decisions that affect their lives on a variety of subjects like:

  • Health
  • Pensions
  • Public Transport
  • Social Services
  • Public Safety
  • Housing

Within the Canterbury district there is a higher than national average number of older people. We need to influence the services and facilities provided by local government and campaign for a higher state pension and fairer system of applying council tax.

You can get involved by becoming a member.

So what are you waiting for - Join Now!

Silver Song Clubs are also run by the Forum see contact details below

The Canterbury and District Pensioners' Forum covers the areas of Canterbury, Herne Bay, Whitstable and the surrounding villages within the Canterbury City Council area.

Our aims are:

  • To promote the welfare and interest of older people
  • To provide a platform where matters of concern can be raised and action taken
  • To raise these issues with the relevant decision makers

We are affiliated to the National Pensioners' Convention and promote the aims of the Pensioners' Charter agreed by the Pensioners' Parliament in May 2005

The aims of the Charter are:

  • A basic state pension set above the official poverty level and linked to average male earnings
  • A warm and comfortable home
  • Free health care based on clinical need and annual comprehensive health checks
  • Free community care and services to assist living at home
  • Free long-term care
  • Free nationwide public transport
  • Free education, access to and participation in leisure and cultural activities
  • Goods, services and benefits without age descrimination
  • Active engagement and consultation on national and local issues affecting older citizens
  • Advocacy, dignity, respect and fair treatment in all aspects of their lives

We publish regular newsletter and our meetings are open to all!

Information
Sing For Your Life
Sing for Your Life runs a network of Silver Song Clubs across the country. People living independently are brought together to share in the joy of making music.

There is ample evidence to show that taking part in social music has a positive impact on both physical and mental health.

Clubs meet each month and are led by trained people. Ninety-minute sessions are promoted, refreshments are provided and help can be arranged with transport if necessary.

Stuart Brown, Sing for your Life director, is coming to our meeting to demonstrate how it works, and hopefully we will be able to get a song club going in the District. Come and have a sing – you don’t have to a have a good singing voice in order to enjoy it!
“The Zimmer’s”
Recently in the pop charts are The Zimmers with “We aint talkin’ ‘bout our generation” their ages totalled over 3000 years, and their lead singer is 100! What a wonderful way to protest about older people being overlooked, and the abilities they have. All proceeds from the sales of the disc go to Age Concern.
The Canterbury Beaney Project
Although we would have liked a new library and museum the grant of £6.5million from Heritage Lottery will transform the present museum and library.

The total cost will be £11million with further investment coming from charitable organisations etc., and our councils.

A new glass lift will link the first floor, and there will be educational spaces for schools and other groups –hopefully ours too.
