It is important to feel safe whether in your home or out and about. Statistics show that you are more likely to be a victim of crime if you are under 25 than over 65. You can take precautions to prevent becoming a victim, these are a few suggestions:

When out, carry a personal alarm. These can be purchased from your local DIY store or speak to your local Crime Prevention Officer.

Never carry large amounts of money on you or keep money in the home.

Do not leave your bag in a supermarket trolley when shopping.

If you have a mobile phone, keep it out of view and always keep it turned on.

Only use your surname and your initial in the telephone directory. That way people will not know if you are male or female.

When you answer your phone just say hello, do not repeat your number.

Make sure your home is secure by fitting good locks on doors and windows. Fit strong doors and have a chain on outside doors. Install an alarm and outside security light. Most burglars are opportunists. If you disturb them they will run.

Do not let strangers into your home. If you have not made an appointment for someone to come and you are suspicious, do not let them in. Call the police. If in doubt-keep them out!

Install a telephone extension in your bedroom.

Do not give keys to workmen or tradesmen. They could take copies.

When walking at night keep to well-lit roads and pathways.

Leave lights on if leaving your property empty at night.
