This type of accommodation allows you to live independently but with the peace of mind that help is at hand should there be an emergency. It is unfurnished accommodation with the benefit of a Warden/ Scheme Manager/ Sheltered Housing Officer who can be contacted via an alarm cord system. The Warden/ Scheme Manager/ Sheltered Housing Manager does not provide care or carry out tasks but checks each day to ensure that all is well and will assist with emergencies. You are still entitled to benefits such as “ Meals in Wheels” etc. A service charge is paid by all residents to cover such costs as paying for the Warden/ Scheme Manager/ Sheltered Housing Manager building repairs, maintenance and gardening. The amount you are expected to pay will vary between different organisations.
Sheltered Housing is purpose built accommodation, designed to make your home and life easier to manage. The council has several housing schemes, which comprise mainly flats and studio flats. Some schemes also have a small number of bungalows. Schemes have a well equipped laundry room, communal lounge and kitchen where tenants can meet with friends and neighbours. The schemes are built with safety and convenience in mind and have door entry systems, fire alarms and smoke detectors.
Some schemes also have CCTV systems. Most schemes also have lifts and shower facilities. Each sheltered property is fitted with alarm cords, which put tenant in contact with a member of staff in an emergency situation. All flats have their own facilities, including toilets or bathrooms. Generally your neighbours will all be of pensionable age, but occasionally younger tenants may also need the support that sheltered housing can provide. Tenants have their own front doors.
Sheltered Housing is not like an old people’s home or a nursing home. The staff do not monitor tenant’s activities, administer medicines or make decisions about tenants lives. Tenants maintain the same responsibilities and independence they have always enjoyed. Schemes are supported by Sheltered Housing Officers who spend only a part of each day there. They call each tenant by the alarm system if desired.
